Project: Restoration of a 116 year old historic building.
Location: 200 Eighth Street, Opelika, Alabama 36801
This historic brick building was built in 1900 by the current owner's grandfather. Our restoration design follows the historic guidelines of the City of Opelika. In fact, our client's uncle's law office still exists on the second floor, completely restored with its original furnishings. The original storefront is to be replaced, reinforcing the masonry structure with brick, steel and concrete block.
At one time, many buildings in Opelika had two story metal porches, similar to those in New Orleans. A tornado in 1947 destroyed most of these.
This particular cast iron porch was constructed from parts fabricated at the Lawler Foundry in Birmingham, Alabama. The structure itself is steel frame with a concrete deck.
